Check Engine Light On? We’ll Find Out Why.

The Check Engine Light (CEL) is part of your vehicle's Onboard Diagnostic System that monitors your vehicle's essential functions and is an early warning system that alerts you to an issue. The Check Engine Light can mean many things, but whatever the reason may be, your car's diagnostic system cannot correct it. This issue needs to be examined by a professional to help avoid a worsening problem or causing an expensive repair.
NOTE: A blinking Check Engine Light is an emergency warning, indicating a critical system error which is a serious and immediate safety concern; it is imperative to get your vehicle to an auto repair shop as soon as possible.

Top Reasons Your Check Engine Light Is Illuminated

Damaged Oxygen Sensor

The oxygen sensor is part of your vehicle’s emissions system and measures the level of unburned oxygen exiting the vehicle. A faltering oxygen sensor could eventually lead to failure of the catalytic converter — a high-cost repair.
Symptoms: Poor gas mileage accompanied by a sulfurous smell, rough idle, poor acceleration, and engine misfires.

Failing Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor or Circuit

The mass air flow sensor is part of your vehicle's fuel injection system. It measures the total amount of oxygen entering the engine so that the powertrain control module (PCM) can deliver the optimal fuel to air mixture to your engine. If incorrect information is sent from a faulty mass air flow sensor, the fuel to oxygen ratio will be off, and your vehicle may be described as "running too rich" or "running too thin."
Symptoms: Engine stalling, black smoke exiting the tailpipe, rough idle, vehicle hesitation or lurching forward during acceleration, and poor fuel economy.

Bad Catalytic Converter

Your catalytic converter is a critical (and expensive) component of your vehicle's exhaust system. It breaks down harmful gases before they exit through the exhaust pipe. Suppose your vehicle's catalyst converter is clogged or begins to fail. In that case, it could increase exhaust emissions, create a dangerous situation due to lack of acceleration, or it could leave you stranded by not starting at all.
Symptoms: Substantial decrease in gas mileage, hard or no starts, and lack of acceleration. A rattling noise coupled with these symptoms can also indicate a problem with the catalytic converter.

Malfunctioning Transmission Speed Sensors

Typically, two transmission speed sensors work in unison to provide accurate transmission data to the vehicle’s powertrain control module (PMC). This information ensures smooth and precise gear shifts based on the speed of the vehicle. A defective transmission sensor can cause irregular or rough shifting, potentially causing damage to internal components such as valve bodies, hydraulic lines, and even mechanical gears.
Symptoms: Harsh shifting or difficulty shifting, inability to shift into a higher gear, abnormal odometer or speedometer readings, and unresponsive cruise control.

CEL On with Few to No Drivability Issues

Some minor and severe issues can cause your CEL to go on with no noticeable performance issues. Small problems can be as simple as a loose or broken gas cap, or as serious as an internally damaged drivetrain. While it may be tempting to ignore your CEL until your next service visit, it’s vital that you have your vehicle examined as soon as possible to avoid risk to your safety and further damage to your car (and wallet!).
